In the context of Ukraineโs recovery, rebuilding urban areas offers a unique opportunity to design environments that are inclusive of persons with disabilities from the outset. The conflict has exacerbated existing physical, institutional, and social barriers, and has increased the number of people with mobility or cognitive impairments due to injury or trauma. It is crucial to recognize that disabilities can be both visible and invisible - including mental health conditions, chronic pain, and neurodivergent conditions - which often remain unacknowledged in traditional planning approaches.
Yet cities can be reimagined to become more inclusive through universal design, barrier-free infrastructure, and participatory planning processes that fully involve people with disabilities. This webinar will address how Ukraineโs cities can advance disability inclusion in reconstruction efforts, aligning with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the principle of โLeave No One Behind.โ
This is the third session in the series of UNECEโs Inclusive Urban Recovery in Ukraine, under the UN4UkrainianCities project, aimed at making cities more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
