In the context of Ukraineβs recovery, rebuilding urban areas offers a unique opportunity to design environments that are inclusive of persons with disabilities from the outset. The conflict has exacerbated existing physical, institutional, and social barriers, and has increased the number of people with mobility or cognitive impairments due to injury or trauma. It is crucial to recognize that disabilities can be both visible and invisible - including mental health conditions, chronic pain, and neurodivergent conditions - which often remain unacknowledged in traditional planning approaches.
Yet cities can be reimagined to become more inclusive through universal design, barrier-free infrastructure, and participatory planning processes that fully involve people with disabilities.
The third session of UNECEβs Inclusive Urban Recovery in Ukraine series, under the UN4UkrainianCities project, will explore how Ukrainian cities can embed accessibility and disability inclusion into reconstruction, aligning with international frameworks such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the principle of βLeave No One Behind.β
This webinar will share international good practices and local experiences, including:
ποΈ Opening remarks from UNECE and the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine on disability inclusion in urban recovery.
ποΈ Expert insights from UNDP Ukraine, the Global Disability Fund and the European Disability Forum and global disability organizations on universal design, barrier-free accessibility, inclusive mobility, and accessible public services.
π Case studies highlighting approaches to accessibility in cities.
π€ A panel discussion with Ukrainian policymakers, disability-rights advocates, NGOs, and urban planners, exploring challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for embedding accessibility into reconstruction strategies.
Join us to discover practical tools, strategies, and collaborative approaches for rebuilding Ukrainian cities that leave no one behind.
