In Ukraineβs recovery from the war, rebuilding cities is not only about restoring damaged infrastructure, but also a critical opportunity to reimagine urban environments that are inclusive, equitable, and resilient for people of all ages. The war has profoundly affected children, young people and older adults, disrupting education, employment, housing, healthcare, mobility, and social ties. At the same time, these generations have demonstrated extraordinary resilience, solidarity, and innovation, playing vital roles in community support, local governance, volunteering, and civic life.
Age-inclusive urban development is essential to Ukraineβs recovery. When the needs and ideas of children, young people and older adults are included, cities become more liveable, accessible, safe, and sustainable for everyone. Intergenerational approaches to urban planning and services help bring generations together, strengthen social cohesion, and make communities more resilient to the long-term impacts of the war.
This fourth webinar in the UNECE Inclusive Urban Recovery in Ukraine series, organized under the UN4UkrainianCities Initiative, will explore how intergenerational collaboration can shape urban recovery through participatory planning, inclusive governance, and responsive public services. The discussion will highlight practical examples, policy approaches, and tools that empower both youth and older persons to actively contribute to rebuilding their cities. The webinar aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Youth Strategy (Youth 2030), the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, and the overarching principle of Leaving No One Behind, emphasizing cities as shared spaces where all generations can thrive during recovery and beyond.
This webinar will share international good practices and local experiences, including:
Strategies to enhance inclusion and resilience in urban recovery through intergenerational planning.
